NBA 2024 potential lottery prospects will take differing paths

This year's draft class showed there are several ways to get into the NBA with top picks from Europe, the G League, Overtime Elite and the college ranks. Next year will be no different. The G League Ignite developmental program has a pair of top potential prospects in the 2024 NBA draft lottery class. Forwards Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland headline an early list of players. There will also be another talented French teen among the top prospects in Zaccharie Risacher. Point guard Isaiah Collier signed with USC and is the top college prospect at No. 3 on The Associated Press list.

NBA draft report cards: Spurs, Rockets among teams that hit it big

It's the easiest call of the NBA draft: The San Antonio Spurs won. That's not to say other teams didn't do very well on Thursday, when 58 players were selected as the league's newest members. But the Spurs being able to take generational French talent Victor Wembanyama puts them at the head of the class. Other teams that did well Thursday night: NBA champion Denver, Golden State, Toronto — even with just one pick — and Orlando, which might now be closer to returning to the postseason mix.

Paris Olympic flame to be carried 68 days before the cauldron is lit

The Olympic flame for the 2024 Paris Games will pass through 64 departments and 400 towns over 68 days before the cauldron is lit. Organizers announced the route for the torch relay at a Paris university. Organizing committee president Tony Estanguet says "the torch relay plays an important role because it has the capacity to touch so many people." The torch will be lit by the sun's rays on April 16 in Ancient Olympia before reaching the French seaport of Marseille by boat on May 8. A total of 10,000 people will participate in the torch relay.

MLB hopes grassroots efforts draw in more Black US players

The percentage of Black players in Major League Baseball has been on the decline for decades, but prospects at MLB's Draft Combine this week think that may soon change. Several highly touted Black players are hoping to become the next Aaron Judge, Mookie Betts or Andrew McCutchen. A recent study from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at Central Florida found Black players represented just 6.2% of players on MLB opening day rosters, down from last year's previous record low of 7.2%. But four of the first five players picked in last summer's amateur draft were Black for the first time. Black catching prospect Zion Rose says "we're starting to come through."

Olympic ice dancing skaters still missing medals 500 days later

On display at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum are nine empty boxes that should be holding medals. They belong to members of the U.S. figure skating team that finished second in Beijing last year but have not received their medals while a doping case involving a Russian skater plays out. Thursday marked the 500th day since the scheduled day of the medals ceremony that was abruptly canceled when the doping case came to light. The exhibit at the museum tells the story of the nine skaters, who are still waiting to receive either silver or gold medals, depending on how the case plays out.

Spurs make it official: Wembanyama is No. 1

Victor Wembanyama is the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, headed to San Antonio with enormous expectations to become basketball's newest sensation. The selection of the 19-year-old from France that had been a foregone conclusion for months was announced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, followed by chants of "Wemby! Wemby" from a group of Spurs fans waving signs from the first row of seats.

White blasts 11th-inning homer to send LSU to CWS finals

Tommy White hit Camden Minacci's first pitch into the left-field seats for a two-run homer in the 11th inning, giving LSU a 2-0 walk-off victory over No. 1 national seed Wake Forest and clinching a spot in the College World Series finals. The win sends the Tigers to the best-of-three CWS championship series against Florida beginning Saturday night. It will be a rematch of the 2017 All-SEC College World Series final the Gators won for their first national title. LSU became the first team to hand Wake Forest consecutive losses this season. The game was a classic pitcher's duel between LSU's Paul Skenes and Wake Forest's Rhett Lowder.

AP sources: Wizards send Porzingis to Celtics in 3-team deal

Two people with knowledge of the deal say the Washington Wizards have agreed to trade center Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics as part of a three-team trade that also includes the Celtics trading Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement hadn't been announced. The trade comes with Porzingis accepting his player option for next season. The deal also includes the Grizzlies acquiring Smart from Boston in exchange for first-round draft picks in 2023 and 2024. ESPN also reports the Wizards are receiving guard Tyus Jones from Memphis, and forwards Mike Muscala and Danilo Gallinari and a second-round pick this year from Boston.

McNeese State coach hit with penalties for LSU violations

An independent infractions panel handed a two-year show-cause penalty and a 10-game suspension to former LSU and current McNeese State men's basketball coach Will Wade on Thursday for multiple rules violations. The ruling came from a panel of the Independent Accountability Resolution Process (IARP). It determined Wade failed to report potential violations, provided cash payments to prevent the disclosure of potential violations and failed to cooperate with the investigation. The case also included violations tied to the Tigers' football program. LSU fired Wade in 2022. McNeese State hired Wade earlier this year.

Free-agent tight end Lewis awaits call for a record-setting season

Veteran NFL tight end Marcedes Lewis wants to go out on top. The 39-year-old Lewis is a free agent and is anxiously awaiting a chance to play an 18th season. That would break a tie with retired greats Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten for the most seasons by a tight end in league history. He hopes the call comes before training camps open in late July but also understands it could take an unforeseen injury somewhere for him to strike a deal. Lewis is confident in what he can offer. He says he's "the best blocking tight end out there."

IOC banishes boxing governing body from Olympics

The International Boxing Association has been banished from the Olympic family but the sport will stay on the program for the 2024 Paris Games. The IOC's decision ends a years-long dispute fueled by boxing officials defying advice and instructions from the Olympic body. The International Olympic Committee voted to derecognize the IBA at a specially called meeting. The IOC had suspended the boxing body four years ago because of concerns with its finances, governance and the integrity of bouts and judging. IOC president Thomas Bach says "we highly value the sport of boxing."

The Gators will play No. 1 national seed Wake Forest or LSU in the best-of-three championship series starting Saturday. Florida is in the finals for the fourth time, and first since it won the national championship in 2017. The win wasn't secure until Michael Robertson, who entered in the top of the ninth as a pinch runner, caught Brayden Taylor's deep fly against the center-field wall to end the game.
