T.J. Watt, Najee Harris leave Steelers game with fourth-quarter injuries

As the Steelers tried to hold on to a late lead against the Bengals on Sunday, they lost two of their best players, running back Najee Harris and edge rusher T.J. Watt to injuries.

Harris left the game on the Steelers’ final drive of regulation after he was tackled for a loss by Bengals defenders Sam Hubbard and Germaine Pratt. Harris’ foot got twisted under the pile of bodies and he was later ruled out. The running game was mostly ineffective for the Steelers all day, though, as Harris only accrued 23 yards on 10 carries. Harris scored a receiving touchdown in the second quarter.

Watt, meanwhile, appeared to injure something in his upper body during a pass rush trying to take down Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Watt appeared to signal he tore his pec while walking to the sideline, grabbing at his chest.

Watt was indeed ruled out with a pec injury during overtime. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Steelers believe Watt tore his pec muscle and he will undergo scans Monday for further evaluation.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin provided no additional updates other than to say both players were being evaluated. Watt was having a huge game for the Steelers defense with six tackles, a sack and an interception, one of four Steelers picks on the day.

If Watt did suffer a torn pectoral, coincidentally, he can look to his brother, J.J., for guidance. J.J. Watt suffered a torn pectoral on Oct. 27, 2019, when he played for the Houston Texans and returned from injured reserve in time to lead the Texans to a playoff victory just over two months later.

“I’m not gonna speculate on what’s going on,” said Cam Heyward, Watt’s co-captain on defense. “Having T.J. out there definitely benefits us. He’s a leader, defensive player of the year. However long it takes, other guys have to step up.

Heyward praised the play of Alex Highsmith, starting opposite Watt, but also backups Malik Reed and Jamir Jones, both of whom were thrust into bigger roles than expected.

“We had to do some different stuff out there,” Heyward said. “We’ll rally around him. When he gets back, we’ll be ready.”

As for Harris, he was seen leaving the locker room in a walking boot. He missed about four weeks of training camp because of a sprained Lisfranc on his left foot but indicated Friday he was 100% healed from that.

“We all hope he’s good,” backup running back Jaylen Warren said. “That’s our leader.”
