New Mexico State fires coach in wake of hazing allegations

New Mexico State has fired basketball coach Greg Heiar in the wake of hazing allegations on the team that shut down the program for the rest of the season. Chancellor Dan Arvizu announced the firing, saying hazing has no place on the New Mexico State campus, and that those found responsible would be held accountable. Arvizu said decisions about the rest of the coaching staff will be made after further investigation. An Aggies player told campus police that three teammates ganged up on him and attacked him. The police report includes allegations of false imprisonment, harassment and criminal sexual contact.

NBA announces All-Star Saturday night participants

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is teaming up with his brothers once again on All-Star Saturday. Portland’s Damian Lillard is taking a third shot at the 3-point title, Indiana’s Buddy Hield will aim to win that one again and Philadelphia’s Mac McClung now can be a slam-dunk champion at the NBA and high school levels. 

NASCAR 75: France family built US racing at Daytona Beach

The France family migrated from Washington, D.C. to Florida because Bill France Sr. said he wanted to escape the cold. But the young businessman and mechanic was a racing enthusiast. France chose Daytona Beach to settle because of the racing on the sand. It led him in 1948 to formalize the National Association of Stock Car Racing. NASCAR will begin celebrating its 75th season on Sunday with a sold-out Daytona 500.

Johnson proved himself in West, now is out to be SEC's best

Jay Johnson is among the few West Coast baseball coaches who have left for the SEC. His first LSU team showed he would not be overmatched in the league that's produced eight of the last 13 national champions. The Tigers won 40 games and reached a regional final. The Tigers go into this season No. 1 team in the preseason polls. That's after Johnson signed the nation's best recruiting class and brought in the top-rated group of transfers. The Tigers also have Dylan Crews. He is the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft.

Noah Gragson is ready to making winning fun again racing for a team co-owned by Jimmie Johnson. Gragon is making the full-time jump to the NASCAR Cup Series this season. He's driving for Legacy Motor Club. Johnson has served as a mentor already. Gragson has adapted a healthier lifestyle and cut back on his drinking. Gragson is ready to make a run Sunday at winning the Daytona 500. He has an automatic spot this season after two years of trying to earn his way into the race.

There were some familiar faces in new places as teams picked up the pace on the second day of spring training. Justin Verlander threw his first bullpen session for the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie, Florida, six days before he turns 40.
