Hazing still ingrained in team sports, with sexualized attacks increasing

From high school to the professional leagues, hazing is ingrained in teams sports in the United States. Studies have shown that almost half of all students say they experienced hazing in high school. At Northwestern, allegations of hazing in the football program led to the firing of longtime coach Pat Fitzgerald. The school is facing multiple lawsuits. Experts believe hazing happens more than people think and incidents seems to be getting more severe and more sexualized.

Sanders will miss Pac-12 media day for leg, toe surgeries

Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders will miss Pac-12 media day due to a procedure to remove a blood clot from his right leg and another to straighten toes on his left foot. The Colorado coach announced his latest medical update in an Instagram post on Wednesday. He's scheduled to have surgery Thursday. Media day for the conference is Friday in Las Vegas. He's expected to be recovered and back coaching in time for fall camp. Defensive coordinator Charles Kelly will represent the Buffaloes at media day. Sanders' son and quarterback Shedeur Sanders will also take part along with receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter.

Disrespectful! Reloading Bama welcomes doubts

Right tackle JC Latham knows only too well that Bryce Young and Will Anderson are in the NFL now along with eight other players that were with Alabama last year. Yet Crimson Tide tradition remains. So does coach Nick Saban, whose roster is always so stocked he never even appears to reload. So go ahead. Make back-to-back national champ Georgia the preseason favorite to win the Southeastern Conference. Nothing could make Alabama happier — even if that snaps the Crimson Tide's streak dating back to 2015. Lathan called those thoughts disrespectful Wednesday at SEC media days. Alabama's expectations remain the same: going undefeated and winning another national title.

Attorneys: Northwestern hazing scandal included multiple sports

Allegations of hazing in Northwestern's athletic programs have broadened. Attorneys say male and female athletes reported misconduct within two other sports and suggested sexual abuse and racial discrimination within the football program was so rampant coaches knew about it. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump says he and other attorneys have received disturbing details from former baseball and softball players, in addition to growing complaints of abuse in the football program.

San Diego State to remain in Mountain West

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez has announced that San Diego State will remain in the conference, at least for now. The Aztecs will get the $6.6 million that was withheld after they initially informed the conference of their intention to leave. San Diego State is responsible for paying the conference's legal fees associated with the matter. Nevarez knows this could be a temporary arrangement. She acknowledged the Aztecs could still leave at some point should the Pac-12 or Big 12 come calling. They are committed for the next two years.

Kirby Smart says complacency is biggest threat to Georgia three-peat

Kirby Smart says complacency is the biggest challenge his Georgia Bulldogs face while trying to add a third straight national football championship. Smart and his Bulldogs also don't have history on their side. Winning back-to-back national championships is tough enough. No Division I program has strung together three consecutive college football titles since Minnesota between 1934 and 1936. Smart said Tuesday at Southeastern Conference Media Days that he and his staff have not talked with the Bulldogs about having a chance to do something not done in nearly 90 years. He says they have looked at how the Chicago Bulls strung together three straight NBA titles and other teams his Bulldogs may have heard about.

LSU's success in baseball, women's hoops ramps up pressure on Kelly

Brian Kelly and LSU face much higher expectations going into his second season as coach. He can look in the mirror for raising those standards after winning the Southeastern Conference's Western Division title in his debut year. The success of fellow LSU coaches in their second seasons didn't help either. Not one little bit. Kelly said Monday all they think about are championships at LSU after what the Tigers did in baseball and women's basketball. Kelly views the challenge as an opportunity. This is the SEC's final season with divisions before Texas and Oklahoma join the league in 2024.

Former Northwestern football players hire civil rights attorney

Eight former Northwestern football players have retained attorneys following a hazing scandal that led to the firing of coach Pat Fitzgerald. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and the Chicago-based Levin & Perconti personal injury law firm announced they have "uncovered a vast array of incidents of abuse in the Northwestern football program." They also said more athletes are expected to join the legal action and it will expand beyond Northwestern football to other college athletic programs.

NCAA to offer second women's postseason tournament

The NCAA has announced it is creating another women's college basketball tournament that it will operate like the men's NIT as a second option for 32 teams that do not make the NCAA Tournament. The Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament, which will be first held this season, brings the men's and women's NCAA postseason opportunities to an equal number. An NCAA-operated second option for women was one of the key focuses of an external gender equity report on the NCAA. Women's teams that didn't make the NCAA Tournament in the past had the opportunity to play in an independently operated WNIT, which was expensive for schools.

Northwestern retains assistants after firing Fitzgerald

Northwestern has decided to retain its assistant coaches and support staff for the 2023 season after it fired head coach Pat Fitzgerald amid a hazing scandal. Athletic director Derrick Gragg informed the coaches and staff of the decision during a meeting. There was no announcement by the school when it comes to the leadership of the program after Fitzgerald's dismissal. The first game of the season is Sept. 3 at Rutgers. The 48-year-old Fitzgerald was fired on Monday by Northwestern President Michael Schill.

Northwestern fires Fitzgerald amid hazing scandal

Northwestern has fired coach Pat Fitzgerald amid a hazing scandal that called into question his leadership of the program and damaged the university's reputation after it mishandled its response to the allegations. Fitzgerald's dismissal completed a rapid fall from grace for the former Northwestern linebacker. The 48-year-old Fitzgerald had been firmly entrenched at his alma mater, an annual fixture on any list of college coaches with the most job security. Northwestern President Michael Schill says the culture within Fitzgerald's program was "broken" in some ways.
