Zia Cooke scored 21 points and Aliyah Boston had her 81st career double double as top-seeded South Carolina recovered from a slow start to power past eighth-seeded South Florida and move into the Sweet 16 with a 76-45 victory Sunday. Plus more second round NCAA Tournament game action from Sunday.

Cuban baseball team draws ire, support in Little Havana

Hundreds gathered outside Miami Marlins' home ballpark in Little Havana on Sunday to protest for the Cuban national baseball team played the United States in the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic. It's the first time the Cuban team has played in Miami, a landing spot for many who fled the country to escape the Soviet-style communist government of late leader Fidel Castro. The Cuban team is comprised of major league stars who defected from the island nation along with current Cubans, who are technically government employees. While some fans wanted to separate sports from politics, others wanted no part.

Wisconsin women blank Ohio State, win 7th NCAA hockey title

Kirsten Simms scored a goal and Cami Kronish had 31 saves to help Wisconsin beat top-seeded and defending NCAA champion Ohio State 1-0, earning the Badgers their record seventh national title. Simms hid behind Ohio State’s Lauren Bernard in front of the net a flicked a wrister into the net to give Wisconsin a 1-0 lead at 13:28 of the first period. Wisconsin has won three of the last four national championships. Kronish, who had 37 saves in the Badgers’ 3-2 overtime win over No. 2 seed Minnesota in the semifinals, was named the Frozen Four’s most outstanding player. Ohio State, which went into the game having scored multiple goals in every game but one this season, was shut out for the first time in 57 games.

Cowboys acquire Brandin Cooks from Texans for 2 late-round picks

The Dallas Cowboys have acquired receiver Brandin Cooks in a trade with the Houston Texans. The deal adds a speedy veteran to play alongside CeeDee Lamb. Houston gets a fifth-round pick this year and a 2024 sixth-rounder. The trade is reminiscent of a year ago when Dallas sent No. 1 receiver Amari Cooper to Cleveland for two late-round picks. 

Astros' Jose Altuve has broken right thumb, needs surgery

Houston Astros star Jose Altuve has a broken right thumb and needs surgery after getting hurt in Venezuela’s 9-7 quarterfinal loss to the United States at the World Baseball Classic. The second baseman fell to the field after he was struck by the 95.9 mph sinker from Colorado reliever Daniel Bard in the fifth inning Saturday night. 

Shiffrin ends World Cup ski season with yet another record

Mikaela Shiffrin won her 21st career giant slalom at the World Cup Finals as the American standout ended the season with yet another record. The victory moved Shiffrin past Vreni Schneider after matching the Swiss skier's mark of 20 World Cup GS victories last week. The American has won seven of the last eight events and took the GS world title last month.

March Madness continues: Arkansas ousts defending champ Kansas

Kansas’ national title defense ended in the second round of NCAA Tournament when Arkansas’ Ricky Council IV made five free throws in the closing seconds and the eighth-seeded Razorbacks beat the No. 1 seed Jayhawks 72-71. Davonte Davis scored 25 points and Council added 21 as Arkansas rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit. Plus more March Madness action from Saturday.

Cornell's Diakomihalis wins 4th title; Penn State wins again

Penn State’s Aaron Brooks and Carter Starocci each won their third consecutive individual titles to help the Nittany Lions to back-to-back team crowns, and Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis won his fourth title at the NCAA wrestling championships. Brooks beat Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen 7-2 in the 184-pound finals and Starocci pinned Mikey Labriola of Nebraska in the first round at 174. Diakomihalis beat Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso 4-2 to win the 149-pound crown.

Romo, 3-time World Series winner, to retire with Giants

Sergio Romo will retire as a member of the San Francisco Giants. He helped the franchise win three World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The 2013 All-Star was an integral part of the team's bullpen from 2008 to 2016. He also pitched for the Twins, Athletics, Rays, Dodgers, Mariners, Marlins and Blue Jays. Romo signed a minor league deal with an invite to big-league spring training. He'll officially retire during San Francisco's final exhibition game on March 27 when the Giants host the A's at Oracle Park.

FDU goes from underdog to overnight sensation with NCAA wins

Fairleigh Dickinson's players awakened to a new world. That's what happens when you make history. The No. 16 seed in the East region stunned top-seeded Purdue in one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history. It's only the second time a No. 16 has beaten a No. 1 in the men's tournament. The Knights were bombarded with text messages and well wishes following the victory, which has brought welcome attention to the small school in Teaneck, New Jersey. FDU now faces Florida Atlantic on Sunday with the winner earning a spot in the Sweet 16 at New York's Madison Square Garden.

UConn has no trouble with Vermont

Aaliyah Edwards scored a career-high 28 points, Dorka Juhasz added a double-double and No. 2 seed UConn routed 15th seed Vermont 95-52 on Saturday, giving the Huskies a 29th straight win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
