New Big Ten commish: Integrating USC, UCLA is top priority

Tony Petitti has been introduced as the Big Ten's seventh commissioner. The longtime Major League Baseball and TV executive was hired a little over two weeks ago to replace Kevin Warren. Petitti will lead a conference that in the past year became the first to expand its footprint from coast to coast. The Big Ten also reaped a huge financial windfall, landing about $7 billion in media rights deals for football and basketball through 2030 with Fox, CBS and NBC. He says his most immediate task is ensuring a smooth transition when Southern California and UCLA arrive next year.

Young is tops in his NFL draft class

Quarterbacks dominated the first part of the NFL draft. Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson were among the top four picks Thursday night, an expected result in a league where teams know finding a franchise QB is the quickest path to success. The Carolina Panthers selected Young, the slender and dynamic Alabama quarterback, with the No. 1 pick, seven weeks after making a blockbuster trade with Chicago to move up to get their choice of potential franchise players.

Holgorsen again part of Big 12 change, UH among 4 new teams

Houston coach Dana Holgorsen is again going to be part of a change in the Big 12. This will be the second time he takes a team into its debut season in the conference. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF officially become Big 12 members on July 1. Their arrivals come a year before the departures of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC, meaning a 14-team Big 12 this fall. Before Holgorsen got to Houston, he was West Virginia's coach when the Mountaineers were part of the conference's last composition change in 2012. They then joined the league along with TCU.

Harbaugh leaves spring with 'best version' of Wolverines yet

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says he came out of spring practice with the best team he's had since taking over in 2015. The two-time defending Big Ten champion Wolverines return 13 starters. There's much less clarity elsewhere in the conference. Ohio State still hasn't determined the successor to C.J. Stroud. Purdue's Ryan Walters is finding his way in his first head coaching job. Wisconsin's move to coordinator Phil Longo's Air Raid offense under Luke Fickell had a bumpy start. Matt Rhule's building project at Nebraska is just beginning. As many as six quarterback competitions will go into the fall.

Tkachuk plays hero role for Panthers, who stay alive against Bruins

Matthew Tkachuk scored six minutes into overtime to help the Panthers beat the Boston Bruins 4-3 and force their first-round playoff series back to Florida for a sixth game. One game after Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark tried to fight Tkachuk, the Panthers forward took advantage of Ullmark's sloppy puck play behind the net and cut the Presidents' Trophy winners' lead in the best-of-seven series to 3-2. Sergei Bobrovsky made 44 saves for Florida, which has won back-to-back games in Boston but lost twice at home. Anthony Duclair, Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart also scored. Each one gave the Panthers a lead.
