Jordan selling majority ownership stake in Hornets

Michael Jordan is finalizing a deal to sell the majority share of the Charlotte Hornets, a move that will end his 13-year run overseeing the organization, the team announced Friday. Jordan is selling to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, the Hornets said. Plotkin has been a minority stakeholder in the Hornets since 2019. Schnall has been a minority owner of the Atlanta Hawks since 2015 and is in the process of selling his investment in that team.

NBA bans Morant 25 games for 2nd social media video involving a gun

Memphis guard Ja Morant has been suspended for the first 25 games of the upcoming season for a second social media video in which he flashed a gun. The NBA announced the suspension on Friday. Morant will also have to adhere to certain conditions before being reinstated. It is the second time he has been suspended within four months for showing a firearm on social media. He was suspended eight games in March after a video showed him with a gun in a strip club. The second video surfaced in May and showed him briefly flashing a gun while riding in the passenger seat of a car.

Knight patiently excited for launch of women's pro hockey league

Patience remains the operative word from United States star Hilary Knight on the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association's bid to launch a professional league. Knight says she is not concerned over the delay in negotiating a collective bargaining agreement with corporate partners. Some other stars have signed lucrative contracts with the rival Premier Hockey Federation. Knight says there's a better and more sustainable alternative to building the women's pro game.

While 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick Baker Mayfield and inexperienced third-year pro Kyle Trask continue to make strides in learning a new offense being installed this offseason, coach Todd Bowles says he won’t announce a starting quarterback before training camp begins late next month.

McGregor is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an NBA Finals

The NBA and the Miami Heat are investigating an allegation that former UFC champion Conor McGregor sexually assaulted a woman inside an arena bathroom after Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The woman's attorney, Ariel Mitchell, said her client has provided Miami police with the clothing she was wearing that night and that a report was filed. McGregor's attorney, Barbara Llanes, says her client denies wrongdoing and "will not be intimidated." The accuser's attorney says her client would discuss settlement offers before June 12 or else proceed with litigation.

CWS' slugging squads know the long ball only goes so far in Omaha

The batting statistics for the College World Series teams suggest there will be home runs aplenty at Charles Schwab Field over the next 10 days. Five of the top 10 home run-hitting teams are in Omaha, Nebraska, and so are individual national leaders Jac Caglianone of Florida and Wake Forest’s Brock Wilken. TCU coach Kirk Saarloos says it takes more than the ability to hit the long ball for a team to win a championship.

Nuggets celebrate their 1st NBA title with parade

Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets celebrated their first NBA title with a parade through the streets of downtown Denver. Everyone was in a festive mood as swarms of fans cheered and hollered as the players went by. This has been a long time in the making. It took 47 seasons in the NBA for the franchise to finally make Denver the home of the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The Nuggets capped off an impressive postseason by beating the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. It's the city's second parade in two years. The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup last season.

Sweden moves closer to launching 2030 Winter Olympics bid

Sweden is moving closer to another bid to host the Winter Olympics for the first time in what is shaping up to be a race for the 2030 Games with only one obvious candidate. Swedish sports officials say there is a desire for the Nordic country to stage the Olympics in Stockholm.

Record revenue and attendance has AHL's business booming

Business is booming again for the American Hockey League. The NHL's top developmental league set records for total revenue, ticket revenue and playoff attendance this season. Over 500,000 fans have attended this postseason with the first three games of the Calder Cup Finals all selling out. AHL President and CEO Scott Howson says revenue is up 15% to 20% from pre-pandemic levels. The finals between Hershey and Coachella Valley is an example of how the AHL has bounced back. The oldest franchise in the league is an institution, while the newest in Riverside County, California, has had to attract new fans.

MLB teams welcome LGBTQ+ fans with Pride Nights

 All but one big league team will celebrate Pride Night this season, yet the sport remains hampered by ongoing issues around LGBTQ+ inclusivity. While Seattle slugger Julio Rodríguez was among a group of players who expressed support for the LGBTQ+ community, the Dodgers were criticized for including the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in the team's upcoming Pride Night on Friday. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw said his objection was based on the Sisters' portrayal of religious figures and had nothing to do with LGBTQ+ rights. 

Oral Roberts embraces underdog status heading into CWS

Oral Roberts' baseball team embraces being the underdog in a college sports landscape dominated by Power Five money, the transfer portal and name, image and likeness deals. The small, private Christian school in Oklahoma competes in the Summit League. It doesn't have the resources of the top programs. The Golden Eagles can show that culture matters as much as those other factors when they play in the College World Series. They open Friday against TCU.

UConn star Bueckers working her way back from knee injury

UConn star Paige Bueckers is back on the court 10 months after suffering the second major knee injury of her college career. The 2021 AP national player of the year said Wednesday that her goal is to be ready for the Huskies season opener in November, but is being careful with her recovery from a torn left ACL. The means she likely won't play in exhibition games when the Huskies travel to Europe in August. Bueckers said she learned a lot from sitting on the bench last season and has done a lot of work in the weight room since the injury.

Diggs returns to Bills' practice

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Stefon Diggs was back on the field practicing on Wednesday, and Bills coach Sean McDermott said whatever lingering issues from last season that raised concern and confusion over the absence of Buffalo’s top receiver a day earlier have been resolved.
