Coaching carousel spins perfectly for Bruins, Stars, Knights

The NHL coaching carousel last summer involved the Boston Bruins firing coach Bruce Cassidy and the Vegas Golden Knights doing the same to Peter DeBoer. Cassidy replaced DeBoer in Vegas and DeBoer went to the Dallas Stars. Jim Montgomery had been fired by the Stars three seasons ago for inappropriate conduct but had gotten back into the NHL as an assistant in St. Louis. Montgomery then replaced Cassidy in Boston.

When LeBron James passes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA's career scoring record, it will end Abdul-Jabbar's 39-year reign as the all-time points champion. It will shine a light on how much work James had to do over 20 seasons to catch Abdul-Jabbar. And it will show how much work somebody in the future is going to have to do in order to catch James atop the NBA list.

Purdue stays No. 1 in AP Top 25; NC State in at No. 22

Purdue remains atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll despite losing its second game of the season. The new poll out Monday also saw Marquette push into the top 10 and North Carolina State make its first poll appearance in four years. 

No. 3 Houston denies Temple 2nd upset; beats Owls 81-65

Jarace Walker scored 23 points, Marcus Sasser had 13 points and No. 3 Houston earned retribution against Temple with an 81-65 win. The Owls failed in their bid for a second upset after they toppled the Cougars from No. 1 in the AP men’s college basketball poll with a 56-55 win last month in Houston.

Chiefs' Hunt, Eagles' Lurie behind Super Bowl-winning teams

Kansas City owner Clark Hunt and Philadelphia owner Jeffrey Lurie are seeing sustained success. Hunt hired head coach Andy Reid after Reid had been fired by Lurie in Philly. Reid has helped the Chiefs to seven straight AFC West titles, four conference titles and one Super Bowl win. They have a chance at a second next Sunday against the Eagles.

Kirk Cousins rallies NFC to 35-33 win over AFC in Pro Bowl

Kirk Cousins threw three touchdowns passes Sunday to rally the NFC to a 35-33 victory over the AFC in the Pro Bowl Games and end that conference’s five-game losing streak. Cousins completed 15 of 19 passes for 150 yards in the third and final flag football game of the NFL’s reformatted all-star game.

German star Friedrich wins another 4-man world bobsled title

Francesco Friedrich drove to his fifth consecutive world four-man bobsled championship on Sunday. His win capped another dominant showing for Germany at the season’s biggest competition. Friedrich is also the two-time defending Olympic champion in the four-man event.
