Peter Billingsley (right) starred as Ralphie, the 9-year-old hero of the beloved 1983 movie “A Christmas Story.”

The original movie, set in the 1940s, follows Ralphie in his pursuit of getting a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle (with a compass in the stock). It flopped at the box office when originally released but is now a Christmas classic, filled with quotable lines (”You’ll shoot your eye out”) and beloved characters.

The new movie will be set in the 1970s, with Ralphie returning to his childhood home on Cleveland Street with his family, Entertainment Weekly reported. According to EW, he’ll try to give his kids a memorable Christmas while also reuniting with his childhood friends and coming to grips with the death of his father, “The Old Man” (portrayed in the original by the late, great Darren McGavin).

Sources say Julie Hagerty has been tapped to play Billingsley’s mother in the new project. Melinda Dillon played the mom in the original.

This won’t be the first attempt at a sequel. “A Christmas Story 2″ was released straight to video in 2012 but didn’t catch on.

Since starring in the original movie as a child, Billingsley has gone on to have success behind the camera with films including “Couples Retreat,” which starred Vaughn. Billingsley also produced the Broadway show “A Christmas Story The Musical.”
