TikTok ‘Benadryl challenge’ blamed for death of 13-year-old Ohio boy

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A TikTok challenge in which people take large doses of Benadryl is being blamed for the death of a 13-year-old Ohio boy.

The parents of Jacob Stevens tell WSYX Channel 6 that their son took 12 to 14 of the pills for the over-the-counter antihistamine in an attempt to induce hallucinations. The dosage caused Jacob to have seizures and put him in a hospital, where he reportedly was on a ventilator for a week before he died.

Family members are calling attention to Jacob’s death in hopes it will prevent other children from trying the challenge, WSYX reports.

“I’m going to do anything I can to make sure another child doesn’t go through it,” Jacob’s grandmother, Dianna Stevens, tells WSYX.

The Benadryl challenge is not new. CBS News reports the Food and Drug Administration has for years cautioned against taking the challenge, which has spread on the social media app TikTok. A division of Johnson & Johnson that makes the drug says on a website the challenge “is a dangerous trend and should be stopped immediately.”

WYSX reports Jacob was described as a “well-mannered, funny, loving kid.” His parents are now pushing for age restrictions to purchase Benadryl and also for the use of TikTok.

The New York Post reports the social media app soon will limit under-18 users to one-hour of daily screen time. Users under 13 also will be limited to an hour, but a parent or guardian will need to set or enter a passcode to allow 30 additional minutes.
