US reaches 1 million new coronavirus cases this month; doctors may be better equipped for surge
The U.S. has surpassed 1 million new confirmed coronavirus cases since the start of November.
The tally of cases in just 10 days shows the reach of the virus amid a strong fall surge.
Several states posted new highs Tuesday, including 12,000 new cases in Illinois and more than 7,000 in Wisconsin, where the governor planned to take the unusual step of delivering a live address to the state urging unity and cooperation to fight the virus.
The death toll is also soaring and hospitals in several states are at the breaking point. Indiana reported 63 new deaths Tuesday.
In other developments:
- The latest surge in U.S. coronavirus cases appears to be much larger than the two previous ones, and it is all but certain to get worse — a lot worse. But experts say there are also reasons to think the nation is better able to deal with the virus this time.
- A senior U.S. government official complained Tuesday that the World Health Organization has not shared enough information about its planned mission to China to investigate the animal origins of the coronavirus.
- The 2020 presidential election had all the makings of a looming disaster: fears of Russian meddling, violence at the polls and voter intimidation, and poll workers fleeing their posts because of the coronavirus. But aside from the long lines and minor technical glitches that happen every four years, the election unfolded smoothly.
- A safe Thanksgiving during a pandemic is possible, but health experts know their advice is as tough to swallow as dry turkey: Stay home. Don’t travel. If you must gather, do it outdoors.
- Intensive care space is dwindling across Europe as beds fill again with coronavirus patients, this time in places that had been spared the virus peak from last spring.
- The National Football League and NFL Players Association say the league has 15 new confirmed positive COVID-19 tests among players and 41 more among other personnel. Meanwhile, a slew of college football games this weekend have been canceled or postponed because of coronavirus outbreaks.
