MLB curtails infield shift, hopes for more singles, speed

One of MLB’s most visible rule changes for 2023 is a sizable curtailing of infield shifts. The practice had grown exponentially over the past several years and has been partially blamed for a steady league-wide decline in batting average.

Johnson powers No. 14 Kansas State by No. 9 Baylor 75-65

Keyontae Johnson scored 25 points, Markquis Nowell added 14 points and 10 assists, and No. 14 Kansas State followed a long first-half slump with a big second-half run to beat ninth-ranked Baylor 75-65 on Tuesday night. Plus more AP Top 25 action from Tuesday.

Astros' Alvarez has sore hand, won't take BP for a few days

Houston Astros All-Star Yordan Alvarez says he has a sore left hand that will keep him out of batting practice for a few days in spring training. Alvarez told reporters that soreness in the hand was an issue at times in the 2022 season and continued to "flare up a bit at times" during the offseason. Despite the soreness, Alvarez hit .306 with 37 homers and 97 RBIs and finished third in the AL MVP voting for the World Series champion Astros. Speaking through a translator, Alvarez said he told team officials about the sore hand when he reported to camp.

Alabama hoops star delivered gun in shooting, police say

Police say Alabama basketball star Brandon Miller brought a teammate the gun that was used in a fatal shooting near campus. Tuscaloosa Police investigator Brandon Culpepper testified Tuesday that Miller brought Darius Miles' gun to him on the night of the shooting after Miles texted him and asked him to do so.

On the clock: New timer will affect more than just pitchers

Of all of baseball's tweaks under Commissioner Rob Manfred, the pitch clock might be the one that affects the most players. Whether you're a pitcher, a catcher, a hitter or a baserunner, there's no hiding from this rule change. The goal is to speed up play by limiting the parts of the game fans find particularly tedious. The clocks will count down from 30 seconds between batters. Between pitches, it will be 15 seconds with nobody on and 20 if there's a baserunner. 

Brittney Griner re-signs with Phoenix Mercury

Brittney Griner is headed back to the Phoenix Mercury. Griner, who was a free agent, re-signed with the Mercury. The 32-year-old had said she would return to Phoenix in a social media post in December after she returned home from her 10-month detainment in Russia. The 6-foot-9 center last played for the Mercury in 2021 and helped the team reach the WNBA Finals. She averaged 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds that season.

Reich to call plays for Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich said he plans to be the team’s offensive play-caller — at least for now.
