Injuries slowed progress in Detroit, Charlotte

The injuries to Cade Cunningham and LeMelo Ball have made this season another dreary one for the Pistons and Hornets, but the presence of those two players mean improvement could certainly come quickly if they’re back to full health.

Shohei Ohtani sparked a ninth-inning rally with a leadoff double, and Munetaka Murakami hit a walk-off, two-run double to lift Japan over Mexico 6-5 and into the World Baseball Classic final. Japan will face the defending champion United States in Tuesday's championship game. Ohtani went 2 for 4. The Los Angeles Angels star scored in the seventh when Masataka Yoshida hit a tying, three-run homer off reliever JoJo Romero.

Buckeyes are headed to Seattle

Jacy Sheldon made a tiebreaking jumper in the lane with 1.8 seconds left to lift No. 3 Ohio State to a 71-69 win over No. 6 seed North Carolina and help the Buckeyes advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season. With the game tied, Sheldon took the pass from Eboni Walker and floated in the game-winning score. North Carolina had one final chance, but turned it over with a second remaining. North Carolina rallied from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a brief lead _ its first of the game. Deja Kelly, who left the game midway through the fourth quarter with a leg injury, tied the game at 69 with 9 seconds left.

Braves make apparent SS decision; Díaz focusing on Reds role

The Atlanta Braves have apparently decided who will replace the departed Dansby Swanson as their starting shortstop. It's not who most people expected it to be. Vaughn Grissom and Braden Shewmake have been optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. That leaves utility infielder Orlando Arcia as the likely replacement for Swanson after his departure in free agency for a $177 million, seven-year deal with the Chicago Cubs.

Sports bets abound, NCAA now embraces Vegas in March Madness

An event that would have been unthinkable not even a decade ago is coming to Las Vegas this week. That's March Madness. The NCAA Tournament avoided the city for many years because sports betting is legal in it. The governing body for collegiate athletics even had a policy in place of not allowing its championship events to be played in Nevada. But now, with sports betting abound, the NCAA has no qualms about playing in the state. The West Region games to be held this week at T-Mobile Arena are among the many championship events the NCAA has awarded to the city.

Antoine Davis ends chase for Maravich's NCAA scoring record

Antoine Davis has ended his pursuit of the "Pistol" Pete Maravich's NCAA scoring record. The Detroit Mercy guard finished four points shy of surpassing Maravich earlier this month in a loss during the Horizon League Tournament. While it looked like Davis' college career was over when the College Basketball Invitational did not extend an invitation to the Titans, he held out hope until Monday that he would get another chance to play, possibly in an inaugural College Hoops Postseason 8. Davis says he's upset about missing out on the postseason, adding he was cheated out of an opportunity no one can give him back.

The Savage Truth: Social Security makes huge mistakes

When to claim Social Security is not a decision to be made based on emotion, such as worrying that you'd better get the money now "while you can." It is not about a bet against your longevity or the full funding of Social Security. Instead, it is a multidimensional calculation.
