The Big Ten has announced the hiring of former Major League Baseball executive Tony Petitti as its next commissioner. Petitti succeeds Kevin Warren and begins his new job May 15. Warren is leaving the Big Ten to become president of the Chicago Bears. Petitti continues a trend of recent hires to lead the top conferences coming from outside college sports. He has held senior executive roles at CBS Sports and ABC Sports.

Japan park where Babe Ruth played subject of climate battle

A historic baseball stadium in Tokyo where Babe Ruth played could be demolished. It's part of a disputed redevelopment plan harshly criticized by environmentalists. Ruth played in 1934 at the Meiji Jingu stadium on a barnstorming tour with other American stars that included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, and Jimmie Foxx. Ruth homered several times before 60,000 fans in games at the stadium. Only three other major ballparks remain where Ruth played: Fenway Park, Wrigley Field and Koshien Stadium in Kobe, Japan. Wrigley and Fenway have been renovated, but plans to save Meiji Jingu have been dismissed by developers and politicians.

Lions trade Okudah to Falcons for 5th-round pick

The Detroit Lions are trading cornerback Jeff Okudah to the Atlanta Falcons for a fifth-round draft pick, according to AP sources. Detroit drafted the former Ohio State star with the No. 3 overall pick in 2020 and injuries stunted his career. Hamstring and shoulder ailments limited him to nine games as a rookie and he had a season-ending Achilles tendon injury one game into his second season. Okudah stayed healthy and started in 15 games last season.

An announcement is expected by the conference by the end of the week. Petitti replaces Kevin Warren, who is leaving to become president of the Chicago Bears.

Fancy a dip? An Olympic reboot for Paris' toxic River Seine

A costly and complex clean-up is resuscitating the River Seine just in time for it to play a starring role in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The city and its region are rushing to make the Seine's murky waters swimmable, so it can genuinely live up to its billing as the world’s most romantic river, one that’s actually fit again for people. In a warming world, the renewed ability to take cooling dips in the river could help France’s capital remain bearable during increasingly frequent heatwaves.
