Celtics, 76ers set for Game 7

Jayson Tatum missed his first six 3-pointers before he drilled two straight clutch ones late in the game that pushed the Celtics past the Philadelphia 76ers 95-86 on Thursday night to send the Eastern Conference semifinals back to Boston for Game 7.

Last-place Cardinals trying to find their way

The St. Louis Cardinals are last in the NL Central with a 13-25 record in a surprisingly lackluster start for one of baseball's winningest franchises. It's the worst 38-game start for the team since it was 13-25 in 1925, according to Sportradar. The Cardinals haven't finished with a losing record since they were 78-84 in 2007, and the franchise has just two losing seasons in the past 25 years. Alongside the losing, St. Louis also has experienced a bit of dysfunctiona departure for a franchise that typically sails along with very little of the choppy water it has publicly navigated already.

Column: Huggins still has a job, somehow, despite anti-gay slur

The abhorrent word rolled easily off Bob Huggins' tongue. Not once, but twice. That should've been enough to earn him a forced retirement, but college athletics has no shame. So, Huggins is still the men's basketball coach at West Virginia. A bit poorer, but hardly a pauper. And, yeah, he'll be suspended for the first three games of next season. But that conveniently allows him to miss blockbuster contests against Missouri State, Monmouth and Jacksonville State before returning just in time for a trip to sunny Fort Myers, Florida. To say Huggins got off lightly is a huge understatement.

A sports integrity monitor has launched a tool to help athletes, coaches and staff anonymously report suspicions about gambling activity to regulators and law enforcement. The tip hotline was announced by U.S. Integrity, a sports data integrity company that played a role in an ongoing investigation into possible wrongdoing involving the University of Alabama baseball team.

Brunson scores 38 points as Knicks stay alive

Jalen Brunson had 38 points, nine rebounds and seven assists while playing all 48 minutes in a season-extending performance, and the New York Knicks beat the Miami Heat 112-103 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Knicks denied the Heat's first attempt to become just the second No. 8 seed to reach the conference finals and sent the series back to Miami for Game 6 on Friday night. RJ Barrett added 26 points and Julius Randle had 24 for the fifth-seeded Knicks, who stayed alive in hopes of reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2000. They did that by getting by the Heat in seven games in the second round, a possibility that still exists.

Woll stops 24, Maple Leafs avoid elimination

Joseph Woll stopped 24 shots in his first playoff start, Mitch Marner and William Nylander had the goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs staved off elimination by beating the Florida Panthers 2-1 in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series Wednesday night. Nylander was the beneficiary of an odd bounce for a power-play score in the second period, Marner scored midway through the third and Woll did the rest as he took the place of injured starter Ilya Samsonov. Sam Reinhart scored the goal for Florida, which got 23 saves from Sergei Bobrovsky. The Panthers still lead the series 3-1, with Game 5 in Toronto on Friday night.

Stick-y business: NHL playoffs a showcase for savvy stickwork

Preventing goals in the NHL playoffs is just as important as scoring goals. Many would argue it's more important More than half the work happens before the puck gets to the goaltender. Sticks in passing and shooting lanes do the work – and sometimes cause harm with deflections. It also works on the offensive end when nifty deflections can make shots impossible for even the best goalies to stop. Savvy stickwork has been on prime display in the first two rounds this year from Joe Pavelski's tip-in goals for Dallas and Carolina's top penalty kill to Seattle's shot blocking.

As legalized gambling becomes pervasive, NCAA rules against it remain strict

An investigation into potential illegal gambling by authorities in Iowa has identified more than 40 college athletes in the state. The probe could lead to potential discipline. The NCAA consequences have a chance to be worse than the legal ones. The penalty for betting on sporting events in Iowa for individuals under the age of 21 is a fine of $645. A college athlete could be sidelined for most of a season for breaking the NCAA's rules against gambling. As legal gambling on games has become pervasive, college sports leaders are cautious about dialing back rules.

Sixers close in on East final with 115-103 victory over Celtics

Joel Embiid scored 33 points and the Philadelphia 76ers easily took a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals, beating the Boston Celtics 115-103 on Tuesday night. The 76ers led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter as home fans booed the Celtics, and can close out the series and advance to the conference finals when they host Game 6 on Thursday night.
