__________
CHARLOTTE, NC — An accident involving a tractor trailer and armored truck has shut down the northbound lanes of I-77 at Gilead Road and is causing major delays.
The accident happened around 9:30am when a tractor trailer hauling latex crashed into a armored truck heading north on I-77 between exits 23 and 25 in the construction zone.
Huntersville Fire Department responded to the accident. Charlotte Fire’s HAZMAT Team was also called in to help clear a fuel spill from the accident and empty the saddle tanks on the armored truck.
No word yet on what exactly caused the accident. Medic says one person was transported to CMC with minor injuries.
Tow truck crews are now working to clear the two vehicles and get those lanes reopened.
Highway Patrol says traffic is being diverted off the ramp at Gilead Road to and back onto I-77 northbound. Drivers should expect very heavy delays and backups in that area.
