Panel denies US skaters’ appeal for Olympic medals
BEIJING (AP) — Arbitrators have rejected a last-ditch request by American figure skaters to have their silver medals awarded before the end of the Olympics.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said early Sunday in Beijing that it dismissed the appeal by the nine skaters, who finished second in the team event that was marred by a doping positive by 15-year-old Russian Kamila Valieva.
It did not elaborate on its decision and said it would release details in upcoming days. Full coverage here:

Wind creates mess on Olympics’ penultimate day
BEIJING (AP) — Olympic organizers closed the ski slopes, then shortened the cross-country course by 40%.
They forged ahead in the halfpipe, and that turned into a full-blown mess.
With the Winter Games whipping toward their finish, Mother Nature swirled up something fierce in the mountains around Beijing on Saturday. Gusts up to 40 mph prompted delays and disarray at several outdoor events, with wind chills down to minus 26 degrees Fahrenheit making Olympians miserable on the penultimate day of competition.
Nico Porteous of New Zealand was thrilled to escape the halfpipe with a men’s freestyle skiing gold.
“Pretty gnarly,” said Gus Kenworthy, the 2014 halfpipe silver medalist, who finished eighth despite taking one of the hardest falls when he slammed his back into the deck. Full coverage here:
