In NIL-era first, NCAA gives Miami probation for violation

Miami has been placed on probation for one year. The school and the NCAA say women's basketball coaches inadvertently helped arrange impermissible contact between a booster and two players before they signed with the Hurricanes. Coach Katie Meier will not miss any more time. She already served a three-game suspension at the start of this season in anticipation of the NCAA's decision.

MLB catchers wary of looming robo umps amid rules changes

Yankees All-Star catcher Jose Trevino is among big league catchers staunchly against introducing robo umps at the major league level. Trevino says Commissioner Rob Manfred doesn't have "any idea what's going on whenever he talks about that kind of stuff." Manfred cautions the that Automated Ball-Strike System is still in "the evaluation phase." ABS will receive its biggest experiment yet at Triple-A, where it'll be used four days per week to call every pitch. On the other three days, umpires will traditionally call balls and strikes with a challenge system in place.

Fight on: It's all USC can do to end baseball's long drought

Twenty-five years have passed since Southern California won its 12th and most recent national title in baseball. The Trojans once were the gold standard in the college game. Four coaches have come and gone since Mike Gillespie won the 1998 championship. Since 2006 USC has made the NCAA Tournament once and has had a winning record in Pac-12 play just twice. The Trojans finished last in 2022 and are picked 10th in coach Andy Stankiewicz's first year. The Trojans expect to be on an upward trajectory when they move to the Big Ten in two seasons.

World Baseball Classic in Japan to still feature masks

Fans of the upcoming World Baseball Classic are going to see two versions, depending if the games are in the United States, Taiwan, or Japan. In the United States and Taiwan, fans can cheer and need not wear masks. For Japan, it’s slightly more complicated.

US savors World Cup berth; Carmelo Anthony named ambassador

It took 52 players and more than a year, but the job is done. USA Basketball is going to the World Cup in the Philippines this summer. And when they get there, three-time Olympic champion Carmelo Anthony will greet them as a new FIBA ambassador. 

Russian agency also appeals in Valieva Olympic doping case

The Russian anti-doping agency has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in the case of Kamila Valieva. The court says the agency asked for the teenage figure skater to be punished with as little as a reprimand for a failed doping test and keep a team gold medal from last year's Beijing Olympics.

Ex-etiquette: Steps for a more successful outcome in family court

Q: My ex is trying to rob me of time with my daughter, and the court is supporting her. Why does she get more time with our daughter than me? I hate her and want nothing to do with her — and I told the judge that, too. I’m as fit as she is, but the judge gave my ex more time. I think the judge is prejudiced. That doesn’t sound like good ex-etiquette to me.

Shannon's surge rallies Illinois past No. 21 Northwestern

Terrence Shannon Jr. shook off a slow start in his return from a concussion, scoring 24 of his 26 points in the second half as Illinois rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat No. 21 Northwestern 66-62. Shannon scored 15 of the Illini's last 24 points as they erased a 14-point deficit in the final 10:07. 

Utah projected as No. 1 seed in women's NCAA Tournament

Utah would join South Carolina, Indiana and Stanford as No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament if it began now. That's according to the NCAA women's basketball committee, which did its second of two reveals of the teams in line for the top 16 seeds. The Utes replaced UConn on the one-line after the Huskies were beaten by St. John's this week. Selection committee chair Lisa Peterson says the big debate was whether Utah or LSU should be listed as a one seed. She says Utah's stronger schedule was a big factor.

Phillies' Dombrowski: Harper likely to report in 2 weeks

Bryce Harper's arrival at spring training camp remains a couple of weeks away as the Philadelphia Phillies slugger recovers from offseason elbow surgery. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said Thursday that Harper is taking dry swings with a bat at home in Las Vegas and will report somewhere around March 8 or 9. Harper had surgery on his right elbow in November after leading the Phillies to an NL pennant.

Young snowboarder from China loves jokes, fries and big air

Patti Zhou is an 11-year-old snowboarder from Beijing who could be the next big thing in the halfpipe and slopestyle. She's making her Dew Tour debut in Copper Mountain, Colorado, this weekend. She's slated to compete in the halfpipe and super streetstyle competitions. She might have even been a contender at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, too, if only there weren't age requirements.
