US sets record for fastest goal, beats Switzerland 9-1

Caroline Harvey scored twice, Abby Roque had a goal and three assists, and the United States beat Switzerland 9-1 at the world women’s hockey championship. Abbey Murphy set the record for the fastest goal ever at the tournament, just seven seconds into the game. She added two assists, while Cayla Barnes also had a goal and two helpers. 

Titans reach 4-year deal with Pro Bowler Jeffery Simmons

The Tennessee Titans agreed Friday to a four-year contract extension with two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. The Titans picked up the two-time defensive captain’s fifth-year option for 2023 for $10.76 million last April. ESPN.com first reported the deal was worth up to $94 million with $66 million guaranteed. Agent Paul DeRousselle did not return messages from the AP.

UConn guard Jordan Hawkins declares for NBA draft

UConn guard Jordan Hawkins has announced that he will leave college and enter the NBA draft. The 6-foot-5 sophomore from Gaithersburg, Maryland averaged 16.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists this past season, helping lead the Huskies to the program’s fifth NCAA Tournament title. He averaged 16.3 points in the Huskies' six games in the NCAA Tournament and shot 50% from 3-point range (21 of 42). 

Climate change adding 50 homers a year in MLB

A new study finds that climate change is making major league sluggers into even hotter hitters, sending an extra 50 or so home runs a year over the fences. A study published Friday by Dartmouth College scientists did a statistical analysis of more than 200,000 balls put into play in the last few years. They say climate change added about 1% to the homer totals.

Ex-etiquette: Cooperate to create holiday schedule

Q: My ex is Christian, and I am Jewish. When we were together, we made a vow that we would support each other’s faith in the eyes of the children. This is our first attempt to celebrate the holidays after our split, and we have yet to put an agreed-upon holiday schedule in place. Passover is on Wednesday this year. It is his week, and he is reluctant to let the kids come over. I’m horrified by his attitude. It’s like nothing we ever said or did ever happened. What’s good ex-etiquette?

Minnesota scores 4 goals in 3rd, advances past Boston in Frozen Four

Freshman Luke Mittelstadt scored two third-period goals in two-and-a-half minutes and top-ranked Minnesota beat Boston University 6-2 in the opening game of the NCAA Frozen Four. Mittelstadt gave Minnesota a 3-2 lead on a power play with 18:20 left in the third period and his second came from the same spot at the left circle for his fifth goal of the season — and third in the NCAA Tournament. Logan Cooley added two empty-net goals to reach 22 on the season.

Caroline Harvey emerging as young US women's hockey star

Caroline Harvey is quickly establishing herself as one of the United States women's hockey team's rising stars. The 20-year-old play-making defender is competing in her second world championship tournament in suburban Toronto, and made her national team debut at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. She is part of second-year coach John Wroblewski's emphasis to develop youth and incorporate team speed.
