Mountain West pitched Oregon State and Washington State in recent weeks

The Mountain West Conference made pitches late last month to the Pac-12's final two members after realignment. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez made presentations to Washington State on Aug. 24 and to Oregon State on Monday, according to conference Associate Commissioner Javan Hedlund. Stanford and California announced Friday they are bolting for the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024. That leaves the Beavers and the Cougars alone in the Pac-12.

Minnesota rallies late to beat Nebraska, ruin Ruhle's debut

Minnesota beat Nebraska 13-10 to ruin Huskers coach Matt Rhule's debut. Dragan Kesich kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired after Daniel Jackson's toe-tap touchdown catch from Athan Kaliakmanis tied the game with 2:32 left. Tyler Nubin had two of Minnesota's three interceptions of Nebraska newcomer Jeff Sims. That included a leaping grab in the final minute that gave the Gophers the ball at their 49 to set up the winning kick. Kaliakmanis went 24 for 44 for 196 yards and one interception. The Gophers have beaten the Huskers five straight times.

ESPN networks go dark on Charter Spectrum on busy night for sports

ESPN is among a number of Disney Entertainment channels that have gone dark on Charter Spectrum cable systems. The channels went off the air Thursday night due to a carriage dispute between the nation's second-largest cable TV provider and Disney. Charter Spectrum is the major carrier in New York and Los Angeles, among numerous other cities. ESPN was carrying a college football game between Florida and No. 14 Utah while ESPN2 was showing the U.S. Open tennis tournament when the channels went dark for Charter Spectrum's 14.7 million subscribers.

ESPN's 'College GameDay' is facing changes and increased competition from Fox

"College GameDay" has continued its reign as the preeminent Saturday college football pregame show. But the ESPN franchise goes into its 37th year with the most changes it has had going into a season while facing competition from Fox and its upstart "Big Noon Kickoff." The core of the "GameDay" lineup is back with host Rece Davis and analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Pat McAfee, Desmond Howard and Lee Corso. But it will still have a different look.

No. 5 LSU has the chance to make a major statement when it opens against No. 8 Florida State on Sunday night. The Tigers heading to Orlando to face the rising Seminoles is the country's only Top 10 matchup this week and the marquee game in the first full week of Southeastern Conference action. LSU went 10-4 last season is the defending SEC West champions. Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee are the only other SEC teams opening against Power Five opponents. The Gators play at No. 14 Utah, the Gamecocks meet No. 21 North Carolina in Charlotte and Tennessee plays Virginia in Nashville.

No. 7 Penn State hosts West Virginia in the game of the week in the Big Ten. This will be the 60th football game between the schools but first since 1992. The Nittany Lions have won 48 of the previous 59 meetings. The national spotlight will shine on quarterback Drew Allar, who is the key to Penn State's hopes of challenging Michigan and Ohio State in the Big Ten East and earning a College Football Playoff spot. Week 1 opens with Matt Rhule making his coaching debut for Nebraska at Minnesota.

No. 21 North Carolina's matchup with South Carolina headlines the opening-week slate in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Saturday's game is in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Tar Heels are led by a Heisman Trophy candidate in quarterback Drake Maye. The Gamecocks are entering their third season under Shane Beamer. The week's schedule includes Louisville and Georgia Tech meeting with new head coaches. There's also a rare trip by No. 9 Clemson to Duke. Quarterback Jordan Travis and No. 8 Florida State face No. 5 LSU in a marquee matchup.

Big 12 opens with No. 17 TCU hosting Deion's debut with Colorado

TCU is finally getting back on the field eight months after losing to Georgia in the College Football Playoff national championship game. The 17th-ranked Horned Frogs open the season at home against Colorado, which is playing its first game for new coach Deion Sanders. TCU won in Boulder in last year's opener. The Buffaloes rejoin the Big 12 from the Pac-12 next season. There are four new teams in the Big 12 this season. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF all play their openers at home. So do 11th-ranked Texas and No. 20 Oklahoma to start their final seasons in the league.

ACC set to take up potential expansion

With Atlantic Coast Conference university leaders seemingly on the verge of deciding whether to expand with Stanford, California and SMU, two members of North Carolina's board of trustees announced their opposition to the move. ACC presidents and chancellors are scheduled to meet Friday morning to again consider a Western expansion, a person with direct knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press. It was unclear if the presidents will take a decisive vote on adding new members, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the conference and schools were not making internal discussions public.
