Can anxiety disorders pass from parent to child? Also, 988 crisis lifeline launches, and more health news

Can anxiety disorders pass from parent to child?

From the ongoing pandemic and the monkeypox outbreak to the charged political landscape, New York City mom and entrepreneur Lyss Stern has been increasingly anxious.

Stern worries that she will pass all of this fretting down to her 8-year-old daughter, and a new study suggests she just might.

“Children may be more likely to learn anxious behavior if it is being displayed by their same-sex parent (i.e., sons learning their fathers’ behavior and daughters learning their mothers’ behavior),” said study co-author Barbara Pavlova, a clinical psychologist in the mood disorders program at Nova Scotia Health Authority in Halifax, Canada.

America’s 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline launched Saturday

Starting July 16, if you or someone you know is contemplating suicide or having a mental health crisis, you can dial just three numbers — 988 — to get help.

Callers will be connected to a trained counselor at a local call center and ultimately routed to potentially lifesaving support services. The three-digit code for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline replaces the 10-digit number for what was formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

The new three-digit number is easy to remember, free, available 24/7 and confidential, said Thea Gallagher, a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health in New York City.

Friends want to hear from you more than you think

If you’ve ever hesitated to text or email friends you haven’t seen in a while, a new study has a reassuring message: They’ll probably appreciate it more than you think.

Recipients, it turned out, appreciated the small gesture — often just a note to say hi — more than the sender anticipated.

What do abortion bans mean for people using IVF?

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allows states to ban abortion isn’t expected to have an immediate effect on in vitro fertilization, according to an analysis by the nation’s leading reproductive health society.

However, the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade opens up a host of knotty moral and ethical questions regarding the storage and disposal of unused embryos, leaving fertility doctors and childless couples fearful of the future.

A report by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine says that IVF doesn’t factor into any of the state-level trigger laws that will go into effect following the court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

How to know when the summer heat is too much for your dog

Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors with your dog, but when the temperatures spike or the fireworks come out, it’s time to make sure your furry best friend is having just as good a time as you are.

When a heat wave rolls in, try to only take your dog for walks in the coolest hours of the day, advised Mark Freeman, a veterinarian and clinical assistant professor of community practice at Virginia Tech’s Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

If the pup is staying outside, make sure they have shade, access to water and that their water bowl is full when they return home, he added.
